The name Bunnahabhain (pronounced boo-na-ha-ven) translates from the Gaelic for “foot of the river”, and it is from this river that
the distillery draws its water – they’re the only distillery on the island to use spring water. The distillery is located within a small village in the far north of Islay, right next to the sea, and up until the 1960s, the distillery was only accessible by ship. Their house style is much softer and
fruitier than the peat monsters that the island is known for. Bunnahabhain’s Year Old (and indeed, most of their whiskies) are entirely unpeated, but you still get that slight waft of peaty smokiness. Those peaty phenols likely come from the peaty river-bed they are named for. Their 12 Year Old was aged exclusively in sherry casks, bottled with no colouring or chill filtration – it has a lovely oily texture, and full of flavours of honeyed nuts, toffee, spiced fruitcake, with just a hint of sea breeze and smoke.
